I was browsing the web last week when an intriguing link popped up. It talked about the Marketing Secrets of the bad guys and implied that we could learn from terrorists.
I clicked on the link and read the piece.
I liked it. I thought the author wrote well and his reasoning was rock solid.
And he was correct. The marketing lesson was obvious, and I had no doubt that anyone who implemented it would achieve stellar results.
I wanted to know more about the author, so I scrolled up to read the fine print. I discovered the author was……
Myself!!!

The reason I mention this is because I have absolutely no recollection about writing that piece. I did not recognize it even after I read it. No memories of it. Zilch!
I went back to my notes on my iMac. And there I found early drafts of the piece, so I knew that I had, indeed, penned it. But I still did not remember it.
We think that our memory is like a camera. Click! And a perfect, accurate image is stored in our brain to be recalled when needed.
This is false. Completely false.
What is ‘stored’ is vague and malleable. What is ‘recalled’ is whatever fits who we are when we activate the ‘recall’ button.
In the famous ‘Lost in the Mall’ experiment, researchers presented subjects with three real incidents in their life gleaned from interviews with family members. They presented a fourth, fictitious, incident about how the subject was once lost in a mall when young.
About a third of the respondents recalled being lost and dug up vivid memories about it. They recalled details such as the clothes they were wearing and the adults who helped them.
In a similar ‘Hot Air Balloon’ experiment subjects were shown doctored photos of themselves, as children, in a hot air ballon and asked to describe the experience. Half of them ‘remembered’ the event and even details like weather conditions.
There is a lesson here for you.
Your life is not real.
You may have lived it, but what you have lived is the story you are telling yourself about it. And you can change that story.
Yes, you can change your past.
Would you like to know more about how to do this? Would you like more blogs on this topic?
If so, let me know.
Peace!
